Today, may people consider natural childbirth “unusual” in the United States to the extent that many doctors have limited experience with natural childbirth and consequently don’t know what to do when a birthing mother insists on having her baby intervention free. However, a small but growing number of self-assured women are demanding their birthright to have their babies naturally with a minimum of interventions and with a few chosen individuals in attendance.
That many doctors prefer medicated or mechanical births and that the women acquiesce is not surprising in our present environment. Increased sophistication in medical technology, the growing concern for malpractice suits plus well-published surgical births such as planned Caesarean sections of celebrities all encourage prospective mothers to take the “easy” way out.
Another component is that many women are unaware of their choices. They are well informed about hospital births, but they don’t know about birthing centers, midwives, doulas and childbirth classes such as HypnoBirthing® and several others designed to assist the mother to have her baby natural, the way nature intended.
Our goal is to encourage women to reclaim the rights to their bodies, to become fully informed about alternatives to medicated births, and to select a natural birth as defined by the mother.
