Fresh from the HypnoBirthing® statistician: Our numbers are fantastic! In the United States, 72 percent of HypnoBirthing women choose to birth without pain medication. The percentage is lower world wide, as 37 percent of women in the United Kingdom (Great Britain) use nitrous oxide (which is rarely available in the US). Our surgical birth rate (Cesarean Section) is hanging in there at15.5 percent worldwide, 16 percent in the US—still about half the US national rate which according to figures released by US Vital Statistics is 31.1 percent.
The HypnoBirthing ® outcomes are based on information from 1716 birth reports submitted by women who gave birth during 2005-2009.
Several categories such as birth weight and length of gestation were examined. It was found that 13 percent of the HypnoBirthing babies weighed at least 8.8 pounds at birth and that 32 percent had a gestation period of 40-41 weeks.
Maternal and baby health was measured on a scale from 1 (low) to 5 (high). The health of the baby was reported as 4.8 and the mother’s health was 4.6.
A similar scale was used to measure the mothers’ satisfaction with the birth companion. This is an important piece in HypnoBirthing as we strongly encourage the birth partner to become deeply involved in the birthing process. We are happy to report that the mothers rated their satisfaction with the birth companion as a “5.”
Parents’ birth reports indicate that 53 percent of HypnoBirthing women had labors lasting 12 hours; 33 percent of the HypnoBirthing women had labors lasting 8 hours; and 11 percent had labors lasting 4 hours.
Our goal is for all babies to be born in the best of health with the greatest un medicated comfort possible for them and their mothers and we will continue to teach HypnoBirthing towards that happy end.
Happy birthing days.
