So I went to my OB yesterday for one of the weekly doctors visits as I’m now in the home stretch at 37 weeks.  Here is my status.  I do not have gestational diabetes, I do not have hypertension, I’m relatively energetic and in good spirits, baby is measuring fine, babies heartbeat is always healthy and strong.  All is well in our universe and HypnoBirthing has played a large part in this positive experience.

However, since I’m 36 (gasp! with tongue firmly in cheek) I’m considered high risk.  High risk?  With none of the high risk factors actually showing up?  They tried to pressure me into genetic counseling.  I said no and dodged that unnecessary intervention.  So yesterday they state that they want me to do two non stress tests a week to make sure baby is fine.  Why in the world would they assume she isn’t for heaven’s sake?  All signs indicate that there is no distress!

They want me to contact them when my insurance gives them authorization for this unnecessary procedure.  Ha!  Even if they get authorization before I do, I will not do two of these things weekly for a baby who has no outwards signs of stress?

My question is why?  My first thought was they want to find every opportunity to induce and then subsequently  section out the baby due to failed unnecessary induction.  The second thought was maybe there is more money in it for them.  My third thought, which is what I think is the most likely reason, but not necessarily ruling out the two former thoughts, is that this doctor does things by route.  She is busy and will not look at a patient as an individual and does things out of habit.

In any case I will ask if there are any signs of distress?  If not, then there is absolutely no reason for me to have to come into that office two times weekly for something so obviously unnecessary!
