Birth Companions in HypnoBirthing® Needed or Not?

HypnoBirthing embraces the entire family, as it is a philosophy more than it is an exact technique. We strongly encourage a partner, friend, family member or grandparent to be part of the birthing experience.

However, there is nothing to say that a birth companion really is necessary. The father/partner might have their personal reasons for not wanting to be present at the birth and in those cases, it’s much preferred that they stay away.

Birth Companions in HypnoBirthing

The father/partner can still show their support of the mother and baby by managing the birthing room and help with the many preparations. HypnoBirthing moms usually have the birthing room arranged to their specifications, including dim lights, music and perhaps a CD with affirmations recorded in the companion’s voice.

The partner can make sure that everything is in order. Our mothers might have included in their birthing preferences that they don’t want frequent monitoring by medical personnel. The partner/father can be very helpful by chasing nurses and other unwanted folks away.

The only two people necessary for a successful HypnoBirthing are the mother and the baby working together in harmony.

I’m currently a student of Stella, Hypnobirthing Practitioner and teacher and am 29 weeks pregnant. I have had difficulty getting the “buy in” from my husband to participate in Hypnobirthing. He is not a believer, however he has not given it a chance at this time. I have kindly asked him to wait in the waiting room during my birthing time with his family. It’s important to keep negative influences out of the birthing environment. I asked my mother to assist me in this endeavor and she agreed to do so. She came into the class at session 4 and was sold on Hypnobirthing! Grandmother’s make good birth companions. I will be hiring Stella to help my mother through hypnosis for an approaching hysterectomy this month. My mom is generally someone who is a proponent of traditional medicine. It was great to see her so receptive to such a wonderful, natural process!

Candace, you are absolutely correct, we want to keep the birthing room positive. Wonderful that you mother has accepted the birth companion role, she’ll be great based on the way she responded when we explained her job description. Her job is to make sure that only invited people are in your room. She’ll also be there to give you everything you want, music, light snacks , light touch massages and so on. You’ll be able to move around to find the most comfortable position for you and your baby. Your baby will be welcomed by skin to skin so she can continue to feel secure and safe in her mother’s arms.
